All about 14 Days Trekking In Armenia

Important notes 

1. During the hiking, all items are transported by 4x4 vehicles. Hence participants should have only small backpack, with up to 30 liter capacity

2.  For each 6-8 tourists, one guide service is required; 

3. During hiking routes, lunch breaks will be held in field conditions by pre-prepared food packages; 

4. Breakfasts and dinners will be held in the camp by cook and served in the big tent; 

5.  Guides always has first aid modern box and radio-connectivity;

 6. In the process of routes’ development, securing safety was taken into account, according to which the main part of the trails are accessible for 4x4 vehicles and in case of any necessity it is possible to arrange evacuation of  participants; 

7.  Participants should have their own hiking boot, hiking stick, hat, sunscreen, glasses, Geretex jacket, rain jacket, gaiters, sleeping bag with comfort rating designed for -5C degree, headlamp, and personal glass. 

8. 4-season tents designed for 2-3 persons,  

9. Sleeping mattresses (thickness 3 cm); 

10. Portable camping toilet and solar shower is available; 

11. In June, night temperature in Geghama Mountains sometimes drops up to 0 – (-5) degrees, hence participants can take either warmer sleeping bag or thermo wearing for the overnight stay; 

12.  The best period for the given route is June-September. However depending on rainfall of the given year, in certain cases, sub-summit segment of Aragats Mountain may be covered by snow at the end of June. For this reason, please take into consideration this fact as well and be prepared with items required (Gaiters).  

13. Please be tolerant to the fact, that depending on weather forecasts, the sequence of routes may be changed or totally removed from the program: being replacing by another route to ensure program efficiency;

  1. Day 1 Yerevan

    Arrival early morning and transfer to Hotel. Rest in Hotel. Breakfast at 10:00 am. The excursion starts at 11:00am with visit to Matenadaran Museum, which houses a unique collection of ancient manuscripts covering such lofty topics as philosophy, law, mathematics, medicine and geography,. After lunch Tour in the City. Conclude the day with a visit to the Genocide Monument and Museum. Lunch/Dinner, overnight in Yerevan.

  2. Day 2 Climbing Geghama Mountains- Sevaberd- Lake Akna

    The climb to Geghama Mountains starts from the Village Sevaberd in Kotayk region. After crossing about 12km road, participants reach Lake Akna, where the first camp for overnight stay will be installed. Camp and other items will be transported by off-road vehicles. Route lengths - 12km Height variation: Sevaberd village- 2100m Akna Lake - 3030m

  3. Day 3 Lake Akna – Azhdahak

    Crossing about 8km length route from the Lake Akna, participants will overcome the highest pick of Geghama Mountains: Mount Azhdahak. Mt. Azhdahak has a beautiful crater, where the Lake Azhdahak of 8m depth is situated. The Lake is famous with astonishing purity of its water. The route is continued from Azhdahak to a nearby pond, where participants will spend an overnight stay. (As per wish of participants, it is possible to reach the pick of Mount Tar by 30 minutes long hike from Azhdahak and see Crater Lake of the Mount as well). Route length - 10km Height variation: Lake Akna- 3030m Azhdahak- 3597m Azhdahak Camp 3100m

  4. Day 4 Azhdahak-Vanki Lake – Geghard Plateau

    The route will continue from Azhdahak to Vanki Lake, or “Vishap” Lake. The route is popular with thousands of 7000-8000 years old rock-carvings. Vanki Lake is known for its vishapakars: giant stones installed more than 6-7000 years ago. The route continues to the Plateau located up from the Village Geghard, which has a magnificent view of surrounding mountains, Azat Gorge, Mount Ararat and etc. An overnight stay will be held in Geghard Plateau. The Route length – 15km Height variation: Azhdahak Camp 3100m Vanki Lake -2800m. Geghard platou-2200

  5. Day 5 Geghard Plateau – Havuts Tar Monastery – Garni – Geghard

    From Geghard Plateau the route leads us to medieval Monastery of Havuts Tar located in the territory of Khosrov State Reserve. After this visit participants will go down to the Gorge of Azat River, cross over medieval bridge and climb up to Garni Pagan Temple by enjoying stone-symphony shaped in the Gorge. Pagan Temple dates back to the 1stcentury. After the tour, participants will be transported by vehicle to Geghard Monastery, which has its place in the list of Armenian seven famous Architectures. The Monastery is popular by its structures dug out of the cliff rocks. An overnight stay will be held in Yerevan City. The route length – 10km: Height variation: Geghard platou-2200 Garni gorge-1330 Garni tample-1400

  6. Day 6 Yerevan- Sevan- Sevanavank Monastery- Dilijan- Goshavank

    Tour to the Lake Sevan will start in the morning. Tour participants will reach Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. The lake is at an altitude of 1,950m above sea level. Sevan is famous for its different kinds of fish, particular for ishkhan, which means “princely fish.” Sevanavank Monastery (9th c.), located on a peninsula will be the next destination for the group to reach. Lunch to be arranged during the tour. Tour to Dilijan, Tavush region. Group of participants will visit Goshavank Monastery, which was founded by Mkhitar Gosh, the Armenian scientist, chronologist, fabulist and author of the first code of law. There are excellent examples of memorial khachkars (cross stones) , the best of them being one carved by the master craftsman Poghos. Overnight in Sevan .

  7. Day 7 Sevan- Vardenyats mountain pass – Karavanatun – Goris

    The route is continued to Sevanavank monastery, and then north-eastern part of the road of Geghama Mountain ranges leads to Vartenyats mountain pass, where one of the Karavanatuns (13 century) of the Silk Road is located. After, the route is continued to Goris. The travel length by vehicle, during the given day, comprises 330km. An overnight stay will be held in Goris.

  8. Day 8 Khustup Mountain (3201m), first day – Goris – Kapan - Baghabourj

    The vehicle route leads from Goris to Kapan, then Baghabourj Village. Participants start hiking from the village to the camping place. Hiking length – 8km Height variation: Baghabourj Village – 1100m Camping place – 2100m

  9. Day 9 Khustup Mountain

    Participants start climbing to the top of the mountain from the camp. The pick has a magnificent scene to many gorges, forests and etc. An overnight stay will be held again in the same camp. Hiking length – 15km, Height variation: Camping place – 2100m; Pick – 3201m.

  10. Day 10 Khustup - Sisian

    Early in the morning, after the breakfast, participants start hiking from the camp to the village, where from transported to Sisian by vehicle. An overnight stay will be held in the hotel located in Sisian town.

  11. Day 11 Sisian – Yerevan

    Participants go to Zorats Karer from Sisian. Zorats Karer is also known as Carahunge, Karahunj, Qarahunj. It is located in an area of around 7 hectares and covers the site nearby the Dar river canyon, close to the city of Sisan. The ancient site is often called the ''Armenian Stonehenge'', but the truth of what it is may be even more fascinating. According to researchers, Zorats Karer could be among the world's oldest astronomical observatories, and is at least 3,500 years older than British Stonehenge. An overnight stay will be held in Yerevan.

  12. Day 12 Yerevan –Echmiadzin- Kari Lake

    Located 30 min outside of the city and considered one of the holiest cities in Armenia. This former capital is now home to the Supreme Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox faith. The main Cathedral was founded by St.Gregory in 303 B.C and sits on a former pagan shrine. Visit of the church of Hripsime, dedicated to the martyred Christian virgin. After lunch participants will be transported to Kari Lake (3207m) by vehicle. Dinner and overnight in camp.

  13. Day 13 Kari lake-Southern Peak of Aragats Mountain -Yerevan

    From Kari lake participantes will start hiking to the Southern peak of Aragats Mountain (3879m). According to wish of participants and depending on weather conditions, it may be possible to climb up to Western Peak as well. Return to Yerevan. Hiking length – 15km (in case of Southern Pick only); Height variation: Kari Lake – 3207m. Southern peak – 3879m
